The STACK Winter Champs completed last weekend at Murrays Bay, with the third day unfortunately being delayed and then abandoned due to a morning of extreme weather.
It was a day for testing patience and water-proofing and both were wearing thin as saturated kids gazed wistfully at the horizon – when it was visible, waiting for some wind. But the weather forecast was spot-on, heavy rainfall giving way to 2 to 3 knots of shifting winds led to abandonment of day 3 of the Stacks Winter Championships.
A few brave support boats ventured out into the early morning storms, waiting for the winds and huddled around a warm smartphone watching the All-Blacks. Suggestions to tie an Opti sprit to one of the ‘newer’ support team members and use him as a lightning rod showed great creativity.
Back on shore for prize-giving we were again joined by some our Olympic heroes, Peter Burling and Blair Tuke, Rio Gold Medallists from the men’s 49ers. Inspiring in achievement and height, you don’t have to be over 6 feet tall to win 49er gold but it helps.
Time to dry out, feed up and start planning the next events. Here comes the sun.
